Martha's Story

Text size

Martha Gaye Clevenger, 71, of Grayson, went to be with her Lord Saturday, March 3, 2018, after a sudden illness.
Gaye was born Jan. 6, 1947, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Lona Griffith.
She was preceded in death by a son, Lyle Scott Clevenger; and two brothers, Paul Griffith and Billy Joe Griffith.
Gaye's greatest joy in life after serving her Lord was being a devoted mother to her son Jeff and "Nanny" to her one and only grandchild, Brayden. As Jeff was growing up and attending Hitchins Elementary School, Gaye was a presence at the school daily. She enjoyed working with the PTA and worked tirelessly to raise money for the school for items that would benefit not only her son but all the children at Hitchins Elementary. While Jeff was in school she loved to watch him play basketball for the Hitchins Tigers. She would often reminisce about the years spent at that little school and the memories and friends that were made there.
In 1987, Gaye went to work for Diversicare at Carter Nursing and Rehabilitation as an activities assistant. She ultimately worked her way up to the role of activity director after obtaining her activity director certification through Shawnee State University. Gaye enjoyed planning activities and social events for the residents and employees at Carter.
She received many awards while serving as director including activity director of the year. Gaye also received special recognition from Kentucky State Representatives Robin Webb and Charlie Borders for her service. She was a Kentucky colonel.
Gaye retired from Carter Nursing and Rehab in 2013, after more than 20 years of service. It is clear Gaye had a heart for service. Her goal in life was to leave people better than she found them. She was very involved in the community even after retirement and most recently served at the Olive Hill Senior Citizens Center.
Gaye enjoyed cooking, planting flowers and spending time out on her porch swing enjoying the beauty of God's creation. She also enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandson Brayden. She enjoyed cooking his favorite foods, playing games with him, treating him to Dairy Queen ice cream and watching him play soccer and archery. Most of all she enjoyed watching him grow in the Lord. She enjoyed hearing him quote the scripture and prepare for Bible competition. She was so proud of her family and enjoyed serving the Lord alongside them and worshiping with them and her church family at Heritage Free Will Baptist Church in Ashland.
She is survived by one son, Jeff (Kim) Clevenger of Grayson; one grandson, Brayden Clevenger; two special nieces, Pam Wilburn and Gina Griffith of Grayson; and a special friend who was like a daughter to her, Sheila Binion Rice of Grayson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Malone Funeral Home with Minister Jimmy Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Lindsey-Pactolus Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Talmadge Duncan, Shannon Johnston, Steve Johnston, Steve Hartman, Bryan Whitt and Jiggs Rice will serve as pallbearers.
Condolences may be sent to malonefuneralhome.com.
