Olive Hill Mayor Kenny Robert Fankell, age 57, of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 22, 2017, at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.
He was born March 7, 1959, in Ashland, a son of the late Owen Thomas and Mary "Marie" Conley Fankell.
Kenny was a member of the First Baptist Church of Olive Hill and was currently serving his second term as Mayor of Olive Hill. He was also retired from the Carter County Board of Education. Kenny was a former member of the Olive Hill City Council, served on the FIVCO Board of Directors and the Board of Housing Development in Olive Hill. He was the former baseball and volleyball assistant coach for West Carter High School, where Kenny loved showing his support for the Comets. Kenny loved being the Mayor and serving the people of the Olive Hill Community.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 17 years, Lesley Hope Waugh Fankell, the mother of their son, Kendrick; one sister, Clarice Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
Kenny is survived by his wife of 13 years, Jenny Gail Lowe Fankell; one son and daughter-in-law, Kendrick Fankell and Courtney Cundiff of Morgantown, West Virginia; two brothers, Sonny Fankell and Larry Fankell, both of Grayson; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Harold Brown of Greenup, and Teresa and Leroy Wright of Grayson; two step-sons and their wives, Devin and Kayla Bailey, and Daniel and Ruby Bailey all of Olive Hill; three step-grandchildren, Gracie Bailey, Pierce Bailey, and Gideon Bailey, all of Olive Hill; and one aunt, Darlene Watson of Ashland. He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at the Olive Hill Historical Society in Olive Hill, (Old Olive Hill High School Gym) with Brother Gary Sparks and Brother Mike Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olive Hill.
Friends may visit from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, and until the service hour on Sunday at the Olive Hill Historical Society in Olive Hill, Kentucky.
Tim Johnson, Grant Stevens, Randy Baker, Bill Stevens, Stan McGlone, Jamie Lee, Shaun Johnson, and Joseph Lee will serve as pallbearers. Bart Stevens, Fred Collins, Justin Wright, Daniel Barker, Christopher Barker, Devin Bailey, Daniel Bailey, Olive Hill City Council, and the City of Olive Hill Employees will serve as honorary pallbearers.
