Jimmie Ray Hargett, age 85, of Upper Tygart, peacefully went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at his residence.
He was born Aug. 16, 1931, in Carter County, a son of the late William Russell and Artie Missy Carpenter Hargett. Jim leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Elsie Gay Stevens Hargett. He and Elsie Gay were married May 17, 1952, in Rowan County.
Jim was of the Christian faith and a longtime member of the Soldier Church of God. He honorably served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War from Jan. 1952 to Sept. 1953. Jim built many homes in the Carter and Rowan county area over the years. He was retired from Harold White Lumber after 20 years of service in the lumber field. Jim was a loving husband, father, uncle and friend to many. He enjoyed being a grandfather and a great-grandfather that enjoyed making those little ones all feel special. Jim will truly be missed by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Joel Hargett; four brothers, Ollie, Colonel, Allie, and Baker; and one sister, Marie Hargett Davis.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Dennis and Kathy Hargett, Darrin and Chimila Hargett, and Kimberly Jones Hargett, all of Olive Hill; five grandchildren, Travis (Amber) Hargett of Winchester, Kelli (Kurt) Hargett of Louisville, Stacy Hargett, Zachary Hargett, and Andrew Hargett, all of Olive Hill; eight great grandchildren, Addyson Liles, Lexi Liles, Jacob Trimble, Lukas Hargett, Jackson Hargett, Mia Hargett-Taylor, Lillith Hargett-Taylor, and Sagan Bowie Hargett-Taylor; one brother and three sisters-in-law, Orby and Glenda Hargett, Mary Stevens Barker, Oveda Hargett, and Jean Stevens; and one brother-in-law, Blackey Hendrickson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Brother Byron Hargett and Brother Gayle Price officiating. Burial will follow in the Hargett Cemetery on Greasy Creek Road in Olive Hill, with full military honors presented by the Olive Hill American Legion Post #138.
Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, and until the service hour on Saturday at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West Highway US 60, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164.
Travis Hargett, Zachary Hargett, Andrew Hargett, Keith Hargett, Byron Hargett, and Kurt Taylor will serve as pallbearers. Ernie Lee Hargett, Butch Hatton, and Sam Douglas will serve as honorary pallbearers.
