Jewell Thomas Peffer, 90, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of Grayson left this world for a heavenly home on January 5, 2018 after a decades-long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born on May 5, 1927 in Butcher Hollow in Van Lear, Kentucky to late Albert and Violet Cordle Thomas.
Jewell grew up in Coon Eye in Carter County. She attended Shell Rock Elementary School and graduated from Erie High School in Olive Hill. She earned undergraduate and master's degrees from Morehead State College, now a university. She taught eight grades at a one-room school at Four Mile. She then taught at Shell Rock Elementary and then at Prichard Elementary in Grayson. She began every school day with the Pledge of Allegiance, a Bible story, and songs. She said about her teaching career, "I never met a child I didn't like."
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Peffer,and by siblings, James Thomas, Irma Clayton, Joyce Thomas, J.R. Thomas, Douglas Thomas, Phillip Gene Thomas and Sytha Lois Tolley.
She is survived by a son, Thomas (Hope) Peffer of Ashland and a daughter, Kathryn Miles Of Wilmington, NC; and a sister, Mary Ellen Edison of Florence, KY; four grandchildren, Sean (Pasha) Peffer, Holly (Mike) Smith, Molly Miles and Jonathan (Jennifer) Miles; two great-grandchildren, Brennan and Madeleine Peffer; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson, James Harris and Mike Smith, ministers. Burial will follow in the Grayson Memorial Park.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
