Mr. J.C. Griffith, age 82, of Grayson, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday evening, August 30, 2017, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness.
He was born May 4, 1935, in Elliott County, a son of the late Fred Griffith and Mae Sparks Kidd.
J.C. was a member of the Upper Bruin Enterprise Baptist Church and worked as a painter for Jim Walter Homes. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from the Elliott County School System as bus driver. J.C. was the original founder of the Webbville Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a former fire chief. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, golfing, bowling, playing cornhole, cutting grass and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. J.C. loved being outside and he had such a love for nature, especially birds.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Henry David Griffith; one daughter, Patricia Gayle Smith; and two brothers, Linza Griffith and Cecil Griffith.
J.C. is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Loma Boggs Griffith, whom he dearly adored; three sons and three daughters-in-law, James (Lisa) Griffith of Webbville, Rick (Krista) Stephens of Carter City, and Billy (Pam) Stephens of Louisa; four daughters and five sons in-law, Wanda (Roger) Oney of Willard, Tresa (Hobert) Rice of Cannonsburg, Linda (Danny) Strickland of Ashland, Lisa (Elbert) Jackson of Hitchins, and Mark Smith of Isonville; 25 grandchildren, Chauncy (Brittany) Griffith, Chaston (Shayla) Carroll, Nick Smith, Akeasha Oney, Kedeana (Gary) Elkins, Emily Oney, James (Jacqulyn) Griffith, Shandon Griffith, Daniel Griffith, Isaac Prichard, Leslie Collier, Elissa Collier, Jaclyn Young, Jace Myers, Austin Salyers, Sydney Rice, Shelby Rice, Auburn Boyd, Joanna (Wes) Rigsby, Jolinda (Kenny) Lucas, Shawntel (Johnathon) Hay, Kyle (Hannah) Stephens, Justin (Briana) Stephens, Caden Stephens, and Hunter Stephens; 28 great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two brothers, James Robert Griffith of Grayson, and Jim Griffith of Sandy Hook; one sister and brother-in-law, Josephine (Carl) White of Boyd County; two special people whom J.C. loved dearly that helped provide care for him, Ralph Skaggs and Linda Reeves. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends who will sadly miss him.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Upper Bruin Enterprise Baptist Church on State Route 409 in Elliott County, with Brother Tim Porter officiating. Burial followed in the Elliott County Memory Gardens in Sandy Hook.
Visitation was from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, September 1, 2017, at Grayson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
