Dr. Harold E. Shufflebarger, 92, of Grayson, one of Carter County's best known residents went to be with his Lord on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Harold was born March 18, 1924 in Hueysville, a son of the late Henry and Goldie Mae Parsons Shufflebarger. During his 50 years of medical practice, Dr. Shufflebarger had served most Carter County families before his retirement a few years ago. He was Mayor of Grayson in the mid 1950's and was instrumental in bringing a natural gas system to the city. In 1959, Dr. Shufflebarger put WGOH radio on the air, giving the area a means of communications and entertainment. WUGO-FM was added later, bringing the area more news and sports coverage. A few weeks ago Dr. Shufflebarger received a personal visit from four-star General Mark A. Milley, U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and was honored for his World War II service as a U.S. Marine Corpsman.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank and H.A. Shufflebarger; one sister, Eugyle Martin. Harold is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel Evans Shufflebarger; one son, Eric and wife Deirdre Shufflebarger of Grayson; one daughter, Alicia and husband Richard Gire of Walton, KY; two sisters, Betty Bergman of Duluth MN and Phyllis Richardson of Clarksburg WV; one brother, Morris Shufflebarger of Grayson; four grandsons, Evan Gire, Alex Gire, Aaron Shufflebarger and Matthew Shufflebarger.
Funeral services were conducted 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Malone Funeral Home. Burial with full military rites was in the East Carter County Memory Gardens.
