Mrs. Gaythel Roberta June Johnson Gilliam, age, 97, of Olive Hill, passed away Saturday, March 4, 2017, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 1, 1920, in Carter County, a daughter of the late Willard and Jessie Williams Johnson.
Gaythel was an active member of the Salvation Army serving various leadership roles and supporting youth activities, serving as bookkeeper and active in women's ministry. She nursed her neighbor, Edna Sivert, until her death, was a good friend and enjoyed fellowship with her neighbors. Later she nursed her husband through brain cancer surgery until his death in 1959. After that Gaythel returned to school and became a beautician opening a shop in Mingo Junction, Ohio. She purchased a home and provided for all of her children to finish school and pursue careers. Three of her children became ministers in the Salvation Army, and two served in the USAF. She was an avid Bible reader and student and proudly used her iPad and cell phone, keeping up with technology until 1997. She will be remembered as a gentle, quiet, and faithful Christian lady.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years, Owen Gilliam, whom she married on Nov. 14, 1936; three babies in infancy, Amy Juan Gilliam, Jackie Douglas Gilliam and Willa Kay Gilliam; one brother, James Paul Johnson; one sister, Willadean Nolan; one son-in-law, Alfred Graham; and one daughter-in-law, Linda Gilliam.
Gaythel is survived by five children, Gloria Gay Graham of Olive Hill, Owen Jr. Gilliam (Glenna) of Olive Hill, John Paul Gilliam (Patricia) of Augusta, Georgia, David Ray Gilliam (Katherine) of Weirton, West Virginia, and Brian L. Gilliam (Loretta) of Hendersonville, North Carolina; 47 grandchildren and great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; and a cousin who was raised as a beloved adopted sister, Judith Kay Barker Whitcomb of Lucas, Ohio. She also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss her.
A Going Home Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at Globe Funeral Chapel in Olive Hill, with Major Owen Andrew Gilliam and Major Timothy Gilliam officiating. Burial will follow in the Kiser - Gilliam Cemetery on Kiser Fork in Olive Hill.
Friends may visit from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2017, and until the service hour on Wednesday at Globe Funeral Chapel, 17277 West US Highway 60, Olive Hill, Kentucky 41164.
Robert Brian Gilliam - Liaison, David Owen Gilliam, Benjamin Owen Gilliam, Isaac Owen Gilliam, Steven Matthew Gilliam and Tobias Alan Gilliam will serve as pallbearers.
